Environmental Policy

At Sheepfold, we want to minimise the environmental impact of what we do, and we are always on the lookout to find ways to do things better, particularly minimising waste.  Please support us in this, and if you have any more suggestions, please let us have them.

Water and heating:

  • Our showers are efficient, and although a bath is provided in one room, the shower is very good and hopefully doesn't encourage unnecessary water usage

  • We will shortly be installing water butts in the garden and will use the waste water collected to water the lawn and plants

  • For guests staying more than one night, we do change towels if required, but we encourage guests, through the notices placed in bathrooms, to keep their towels for subsequent nights

  • All the radiators and towel rails upstairs have their own thermostatic controls so guests can select appropriate temperatures.  Downstairs, we have underfloor heating with individual room thermostats, making optimal temperature control very easy

  • The boiler is new and very efficient, and is operated on an 'eco' setting

Toiletries:

  • We have chosen the Bramley range of bath and body products, handmade in Somerset, using the highest quality essential oils in natural bases. Bramley celebrate the English countryside. The products do not contain harmful or unethical ingredients and are biodegradable, and  the packaging is recyclable. Bramley's wholesale products are made in small batches which ensures freshness and maximises shelf life. For more information, see https://www.bramleyproducts.co.uk/pages/about-us

  • We use large refillable bottles rather than leaving miniatures for our guests. This helps prevent throwing out half-used small plastic bottles and helps reduce waste

Cleaning products:

  • We have selected a range of environmentally responsible products that are biodegradable and hypo-allergenic

Light bulbs:

  • Our light bulbs are 'saver' ones rather than traditional bulbs

Tea, coffee and hot chocolate:

  • We have chosen hot drink products which are from Fair Trade suppliers.

Bread:

  • If we make our own bread, we use local flour from the Matthews' Mill in Shipton, purchasing this from the village shop. We often buy locally made artisan bread from the Upton Smokery and the Burford Garden Company.

Breakfast jam and marmalade:

  • Our preserves are largely made in-house, and honey is purchased from Oxfordshire producers.

Eggs

  • Our eggs are always free range.

Paper and paper products:

  • We buy recycled paper, stationery and loo rolls.

Recycling:

  • West Oxfordshire District Council recycle our glass, plastics, paper and cardboard, as well as food waste. We ask guests to consider helping us keep recyclables separate by placing paper (not tissues), cardboard, recyclable plastic and glass in the wastepaper bin in the bedroom and using the bin in the bathroom for bathroom waste items only.

Travel:

  • We can offer those guests wanting to travel by train a pick up from Charlbury or Kingham stations, or from Shipton itself, if this is feasible for us, or we  can arrange local taxis

  • We have good suggestions for car-free walks, and have a  range of maps and guides. The Oxfordshire Way runs close to the village

  • We welcome walkers and cyclists and can provide secure bike storage as well as offering washing and drying facilities
